Beginner guide
What is an EA?
An EA (Expert Advisor) is a program that places trades on a forex platform according to preset rules. People also call it an automated trading program or trading robot. It does not guarantee profits. Understanding how it works — and its limits — matters more than installing one blindly.
How does it run on MT4 / MT5?
Many retail traders use platforms such as MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or MetaTrader 5 (MT5). An EA attaches to a chart: when market conditions match rules you (or a developer) defined, it can open, close, or adjust orders such as stop-loss levels.
Think of it as an assistant that follows a script. The script is written in advance; when conditions hit, it acts. A weak script — or a market that no longer matches the assumptions — can produce poor results.
You still need to stay logged in (or use a VPS), and you still carry account, leverage, and capital risk. The broker, platform, and connection quality also affect real fills.
What can it do — and what can it not?
Common capabilities
- Watch the market and place orders by rule, so you spend less time staring at charts
- Apply stop-loss, take-profit, or position-size rules consistently
- Help you review how rules behaved on historical data in backtests or demos (still not a promise of future results)
Honest limits
- It cannot guarantee profits or remove market and leverage risk
- It cannot replace your understanding of rules, parameters, and money management
- Live slippage, spreads, and disconnects may differ from a clean backtest
- It is not a “set and lie back” money machine; hard-sell promises deserve extra caution
Who is this learning path for?
A better fit if you
- Want a plain explanation of automated trading before anyone sells you software
- Are willing to learn how to evaluate systems and risk before you commit capital
- Treat course fees and trading capital as separate things
Probably not a fit if you
- Want someone to trade for you, promise returns, or sell “financial freedom”
- Would fund high-leverage forex with rent money or borrowed cash
- Do not want to learn — only to “install something and be done”
